Subhash Kapoor Won’t Be Directing MUNNA BHAI 3

Tuesday, 1st Sept 2015, 5:23 PM IST ‘Jolly LLB’ director Subhash Kapoor was supposed to direct the third installment of ‘Munna Bhai’ series. However, he won’t be directing the film. The director says that his story is too relevant to current time and the production house says that Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani were not happy with the script. According to Chopra's spokesperson, Kapoor had been given a detailed brief and a cheque amounting to lakhs to develop the script. "But when he submitted the first draft, it was apparent that he was not on the same page as Vinod and Raju (Rajkumar Hirani, who has directed the two earlier films in the series, ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’). The script he had submitted did not meet up to their expectations and it was decided then to take the franchise forward with another director. Subhash has since returned the money he was paid but continues to capitalize on the equity. He pretends he's still associated with the franchise, saying he is still not ready with the script and working on a sequel of ‘Jolly LLB’ now, when the truth of the matter is that the production house is never going to return to him," added the spokesperson. When Subhash was contacted, he first stated, "Nothing to add, thx." But then the director later said, "Only one thing—the concept that I had submitted to Vinod for ‘Munna Bhai 3’ had a strong connect with the prevailing political situation in 2013 when the UPA was ruling the country. With Sanju's non-availability and the change of government at the Centre in 2014, it was felt that the concept may not be relevant anymore. So, Vinod and I have mutually decided to terminate our contract."
