Monday, 29th June 2015, 3:42 PM IST The song ‘Mata Ka Email’ from ‘Guddu Rangeela’ is a track with some funny lyrics in it. However, the song has not gone down well with a few religious groups across North and West of the country. The makers have been getting several emails and threatening calls asking them to remove this song from the film. They have been threatened that if the song is not removed from the movie then they would risk facing dire consequences, including disruptions at the theatres. Recently in Ludhiana, there were demonstrations held demanding a ban to be put on the film and posters of the film were put on fire. Talking about the controversy, director Subhash Kapoor said, “‘Guddu Rangeela’ is not a religious film. It's a masala entertainer with a message. There is nothing in the film that can hurt anybody's religious sentiments. The film is certified by the Censor Board and I request people to see the film when it releases on July 3 and then come to their own conclusions.” The movie has been given a U/A certificate, but a few words and phrases were asked to be chopped off. Kapoor said, "I was aware of the list and made some changes on my own before I went to the Board. For instance, 'ch***ya' was replaced with 'ghatiya'. I was expecting them to take objection to 'maa ki', 'yeh paanch Pandavon ka nahin hijron ka panchayat hai' and 'lugai ke ghagre mein ghusa tha' but since the film is set in Haryana and deals with characters from a certain social strata, that's the lingo they'd use." "I was taken aback by the objections to 'saali' and 'maal' but it was explained to me that since they were used in a derogatory way with reference to a woman—saali bhaag gayi! And kya maal hai?—they were inappropriate. Also, 'pakadna' and 'lena' lend themselves to various interpretations," added the director. Kapoor was also asked to mute the phrase 'nichla samaj'. "I pointed out that even the government in its documentation refers to 'pichda samaj' and 'nichle varg ke log'. It was argued that certain social organisations might take offense," he said. He further said, "I'm happy with that and the fact that they did not raise any objections to the thematic content. ‘Guddu Rangeela’ is an entertaining, commercial film which touches on sensitive issues like honour killings and khaps but the censors had no issues with that."
