Monday, 5th February 2018, 12:30 PM IST Filmmaker Kabir Khan has locked August 30, 2019, as the release date of his upcoming Kapil Dev biopic 83 starring Ranveer Singh. The film will be produced by Phantom Films which is co-owned by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena. As suggested by the title, 83 will chronicle the Indian Cricket Team’s first World Cup win against West Indies in 1983 under the captainship of Kapil Dev. Interestingly, members of the original 1983 squad will be training Ranveer Singh for the film. Kabir Khan once said, “The whole team will have to undergo some prep work. There will be a boot camp where they all will be trained for (playing) cricket. Members of the 1983 World Cup squad will be helping us, they will be there as consultants and coaches for the team. It will begin next year." When asked about his decision to cast Ranveer as Kapil Dev, Kabir had reasoned, “Ranveer is an actor, he will play according to the demand and requirement of the character. I have always admired Ranveer as an actor. He (Ranveer) is a young boy with a great sense of enthusiasm and energy. His physicality is correct to play Kapil Dev, who is an icon. He loved the story and is happy to play Kapil Dev on screen." Ranveer Singh is currently shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, following which he will work with Rohit Shetty on Simmba.
