Tuesday, 25th Nov 2014, 4:38 PM IST Ashim Ahluwalia – whose film ‘Miss Lovely’, based on the sleazy world of Mumbai's C-grade cinema, made it to Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section in 2012 – is all set for his next film, an adaptation of writer and gay activist R Raj Rao's novel, ‘The Boyfriend’.
The novel revolves around a love affair between a middle-aged male journalist and a young Dalit boy. The novel is set mostly in Mumbai and has strong traces of dark humour – a characteristic Ahluwalia wants to stick to.
According to sources, the movie will explore the class and caste dynamics in a relationship.
Apparently, the casting for Ahluwalia's film is underway. "There will be more clarity on it early next year. The screenplay is currently being polished at the Screenwriter's Lab while talks with a French production house are nearing closure". Interestingly, ‘Shahid’ and ‘Citylights’ maker Hansal Mehta is also working on a homosexual love story, which will feature Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles.
