UNGLI Is Half Baked Social Drama
Pluses:
Emraan Hashmi has very little do in film but still delivers a good act, Randeep Hooda shines bright in a powerful role, Neil Bhoopalam is decent, great story idea
Minuses:
amateur writing writing, forced songs, Kangana Ranaut and Sanjay Dutt look jaded, lots of unintentional comic cameos from Raza Muraad, Reema Lagoo, 2nd half drags
Critic Rating: 2/5
Business Rating: 1.5/5
Verdict:
Watch it for basic noble idea behind the film
Detailed Analysis:
Rensil D' Silva was applauded by all for his path breaking writing in 'Rang De Basanti' but he followed that with a very superficial film 'Kurbaan'. Now he is back with another social film 'Ungli'.
Film has interesting plot though it never shapes up. Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi) is a cop but he is careless and non serious about his job. Kale (Sanjay Dutt) is old friend of Nikhil's father who was also a cop. Ungli gang is solving issue of common man but in unlawful manner. So ACP (Raza Muraad) gives charge to Kale to sole this case and Kale brings in Nikhil to find out about Ungli gang. Ungli gang is lead by Abhay Kashyap (Randeep Hooda) and three more members in Maya (Kangana Ranaut) and two other characters played by Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi. They formed this gang after Maya's brother (Arunoday Singh) was badly hit in road rage and went into coma but he never got justice as powerful men were behind that incident. Ungli gang becomes hero in the eyes of common man as they punish corrupt clerks in government offices, RTO officers etc. Nikhil manages to join Ungli gang as mole from Police department and now whether he will expose the gang or turn the table on Police forms the rest of the story. Performance wise Randeep Hooda maintains his impeccable record in such badly written script. He plays the role with full gusto. Emraan Hashmi suffers due to shorter role and cliche characterization. Still he brings his style to save the day. Kangana Ranaut and Sanjay Dutt looked disinterested and Neha Dhupia had small but impressive role. Angad Bedi are Neil Bhoopalam good. There are few real badly sketched cameos from Arunoday Singh, Razaa Muraad and Reema Laagoo. Film has some real forced songs which were not required in first place. Editing is top notch and cinematography is tacky. Background score is good. Story was exciting but screenplay is so bad that film goes to another level of boredom. Though Milap Zaveri again provides sme real genuine laughter and much needed edge to dialogues. There are some real bad sequences. Art department and costume department are average.
Director Rensil D' Silva missed it and missed it big time. Randeep Hooda goes to Neha Dhupia in middle of night to give CD, one dimensional characterization of all government servants and many more blunders leave you flustered. Film is neither a social drama nor its an entertainer. Film will release today and will get 1800 - 2000 screens which will be apt for such film. Film has good chances at box office as there is no major competition but with such content only miracle or Emraan's star power can save it.
Go for this one if any social film works for you!
