Deepika Padukone’s Video My Choice Faces Backlash

Wednesday, 1st April 2015, 5:49 PM IST Vogue has come up with a woman empowerment video titled ‘My Choice’ which features Deepika Padukone along with other women and celebrities. The video has been directed by Homi Adajania and was launched recently. However, the video has faced backlash. Well, a few lines in the narrative have not gone down well with the viewers. A statement from the makers of the video, states, “The aim of the Vogue Empower initiative, launched with the seventh anniversary issue, is to encourage people to think, talk and act in ways big or small on issues pertaining to women's empowerment. The message is simple: It starts with you.” A few lines from the video states a woman’s choice to wear the clothes she likes, have the figure she wants, do whatever she feels like, return home whenever she wants to, have sex before marriage or outside of marriage or none at all, to love temporarily or to lust forever, have a baby or not have a baby, etc. The disapproval was mainly on the lines like “to have sex outside of marriage”, which clearly points to adultery. Disloyalty is something that none of the genders should do to their partners. Some people have raised the point that the video lacks the true essence of empowerment and points like infanticide, child education, child marriage, rape, marital rape, harassment, domestic violence, etc are missing from it. A male version of ‘My Choice’ has also released which is a parody of the Deepika’s video.
