RAANJHANA Is Heart Wrenching Romantic Saga
2nd half starts at slow pace, two not so great songs in 2nd half
Watch it for small town vintage romance and honest performances
Anand L Rai started with some real bad films few years back but with his last outing "Tanu Weds Manu" he finally made a mark. Hi latest offering has few similar pointers, south Indian male lead, unusual pairing and film is set in Uttar Pradesh.
Film starts in Varanasi (Banaras) and how a small town love tale flourishes between Kundan (Dhanush) and Zoya (Sonam). After some 16 slaps and two incidences Zoya is forced to leave city and from ALigarh she moves to Delhi University. She falls in love with Abhay Deol's character and from there on film goes through some real emotional twists and upheavals. Climax is twisted too and for me it worked big time especially the last lines, the very last ones!
Performance wise Dhanush makes a smashing debut and you can't help but remember Kamal Hassan's performance in "Saagar". Sonam Kapoor surprises with such a neat performance and now this will be her it film. Supporting cast consisting of Abhay Deol in cameo and actor playing Dhanush's friend gets all the claps.
Film is lifted to another level by amazing background score and music by Rahman and especially first two songs in film "Tum Tak" and "Raanjhana" set the tone. Dialogues need special mention as this is easily the best writing which depicts Banaras effortlessly. Editing is crisp and cinematography is apt too.
But it is drector Anand who is the real winner. He manages to pull off real odd twist with ease and film flows in such a natural manner that one keeps wondering the talent. Though few people will question last 10 minutes, but still you come out more than satisfied.Cliamx deserves special praise as it leaves you stunned but emotional.
Overall film will appeal to youth especially in small towns and film should do well in UP, Delhi and South. Film might grow after initial positive word of mouth and we might have 3rd romantic hit of 2013 after "Aashiqui 2" and YJHD,
Go for this one if you ever fell in love or want to experience it anyways, strongly recommended!
