'Peepli Live' Co-Director Farooqui Convicted For Rape And Sentenced To 7 Years In Prison

Saturday, 6th August 2016, 02:00 PM IST Popular writer and director Mahmood Farooqui has been sentenced to seven years of prison for raping a 35-year old American citizen. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain found Farooqui guilty under section 376 of the IPC, and passed the sentence. The judgment was passed by a fast track court set for such cases. The incident occurred on March 28, 2015 and a report of the same was registered with the New Friends Colony police on June 19, 2015. The victim is a student of PhD from Columbia University and was in India for some research work. In the case, victim alleged that after raping her, Farooqui had apologised via multiple emails. These emails and phone records proved to be key evidences during the trail. Mahmood is married to director and screenwriter Anusha Rizvi, who directed the satire comedy film 'Peepli Live'.
