Vivek Agnihotri: Box Office Numbers & Critical Acclaim, Both Are Very Important For The Success Of A Movie
Box Office Capsule got an opportunity to talk to the director wherein we asked him a few questions regarding his recent release The Tashkent Files, where he opened up about the research for the movie, the actors and much more. Read on to know the deets!

Vivek Agnihotri is a director, producer and screenwriter who has worked on movies like Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets, Zid, Hate Story, etc and has recently given us the movie The Tashkent Files, which is about the mysterious death of India's 2nd Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Box Office Capsule got an opportunity to talk to the director wherein we asked him a few questions regarding his recent release The Tashkent Files, where he opened up about the research for the movie, the actors and much more. Read on to know the deets!

1. How did you come up with this concept?

What investigation journalists should have asked years back is what I have asked. in any society when the politicians, the activists and the journalists failed to do something is done by poets, writers, directors or anyone and that’s what I have done it here. You will see more films like this because they are corrupt and therefore this film is purely for honest journalists.

2. How was it working with Mithun Chakraborty?

Mithun da is wonderful. He is one of the finest actors I have worked with. The way he gets into the character is unbelievable. He is a very detailed actor. Once he is on sets, you cannot differentiate between Mithun da and the character.

3. How did you find Shweta Basu for this role?

Shweta came for the audition and she was rejected at first. But then she came once again to our office and said I want to give the audition once again. In her second audition, she was fabulous and we said this is the girl we are searching for.

4. How was it working with your wife, Pallavi Joshi?

Working with Pallavi is amazing because besides being a great actress, she is a wonderful person. So on the sets, to maintain this nice and warm and homely atmosphere and keeping everyone happy, Pallavi plays an important role for this. Pallavi is so talented you can’t imagine, she transforms into her character so precisely.

5. What according to you is more important, critical acclaim or box office numbers?

Both. Box office numbers are also very important, but in movies like The Tashkent Files, nobody believed in it. Except for me, very rare people believed in it, therefore, I released it in a small way. But the way people are coming to me and telling me that the number is getting bigger. The movie is growing and people are talking about it is amazing.

6. Do you thin young crowd is going to watch the movie or is it out of their interest?

Oh no, the number of young people is bigger than anyone else for this movie. More than anyone else I got to know that the young audience is liking the movie.

7. Do you think the taste of people for the movies is changing nowadays?

No. the thing about Bollywood is that it underestimates the youth. They think the youth only wants to see the comedy and romance. Why do you think young people watch Hollywood more than Bollywood, it is only because Hollywood gives them the content and Bollywood is lacking that. You give them content they will make it work, the young mind is the most curious, give them the right information through movies.

8. You have directed, produced and worked on the screenplay of The Tashkent Files, how was the journey of handling it one-handed?

I don’t know any other way. Whenever I take any film, I automatically become the producer as well. In India, a director is supposed to handle everything, so I believe if I’m going to direct it, I will only produce it. This was a very researched movie, and generally, people don’t invest in researched scripts and therefore I became the producer as well.

9. Was it difficult to take any of the actors on board?

Not at all. Everyone came in so easily, we didn’t have to convince anyone.

10. What’s next?

I don’t want to just make any film even in the future. I want to work on researched films. We have been doing research on some of the topics currently, let’s see whatever impresses us much we will pick that.
