PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO Is Perfect Old School Family Entertainer
Pluses: Salman Khan is extraordinary in double role, Sonam Kapoor is decent, popular super hit songs, well shot, lavish sets and costumes Minuses:
badly edited, faulty placing of songs, underdeveloped characters
Critic Rating: 4/5
Business Rating: 4.5/5
Verdict:
Watch it for Salman Khan and old school family drama
Detailed Analysis: Sooraj Barjatya made historic debut with 'Maine Pyar Kiya'. Then he gave blockbuster 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun' and film remained in theaters for years and became kind of cult. After giving rather average 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' and disappointing 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon', he gave hit 'Vivaah' and now he is back with his favorite 'Prem' in PRDP.
The film has been projected as complete family drama. It revolves around the story of prince Vijay Singh (Salman Khan) who is about to be appointed as new King of state of Pritampur. He is about to get married to princess Maithali (Sonam Kapoor). But his brother Ajay ( Neil Nitin Mukesh) plans to kill him with the help of CEO of state (Armaan Kohli). In that assassination attempt Vjay gets away and confined in a secret fort by Bapu (Anupam Kher). Look a like of Prince Vijay is Prem Dilwala who is a small time drama actor in Ayodhyaya. Prem plays prince for four days so that Vijay can get back in shape for 'raajtilak'. There is also a sidetrack two step sisters of Vijay. How this two heroes play the game to win the love of Maithali and defeat evil plans of Ajay & company. The pace of the film is good in the 1st half and there are some funny moments and story moves at brisk space. But the director has not much plot in the 2nd half and did not know how to wind up the film with underdeveloped villains. There isn’t much of a script as film goes on and on around brother - sister issue. It is that kind of film where you just have to go with the flow and do not think much about the story as well as logic (prince and his servants use I - phone but he travels in chariot instead of car which is used by only his brothers?Prem breaks promise of remaining silent for four days but not even once the language issue comes in the picture as Prince knew several languages???) Performance wise Salman Khan is complete package as he dances well, acts well and makes you laugh throughout. He is simply outstanding in double role and to be fair, he carries a weak script on his shoulders. But Sonam Kapoor is a weak link which is a shame as Sooraj Barjatya always portrayed his actresses in a dream girl style and they became rage pf the nation (remmeber Bhagyashree and Madhuri Dixit). Sonam giggles and giggles throughout. Deepak Dobariyal again proves his worth even in a small role as he gets clap for every dialogue. Neil Nitin Mukesh is honest but Armaan Kohli remains in Nigg Boss mode with hell lot of over acting. Anupam Kher is good and so is the other supporting cast including Swara Bhaskar. Film has below par screenplay but dialogues are good in Sooraj Barjatya zone. Though stale story disappoints to an extent which is inspired by Anthony Hope's novel 'The Prisoner Of Zenda' [1894], which has been adapted innumerable times on film and stage. Film has poor editing as film is too slow in 2nd half and 10 minutes too long. Music is strong forte of the film as title song, Bachpan, Aaj Unse Milna and Jalte Diye all are chartbusters. Himesh Reshammiya should be applauded for walking tricky tight rope of Sooraj Barjatya school and demand of today's times. Cinematography is good, production design is perfect and costumes are apt. Background score is irritating.
Director Sooraj Barjatya has done decent job with this one but to be honest he is saved by presence of super star and good music. He seems confused as he tries to hide Sonam with underutilized love track and too much of brother - sister relationship issues. Bigger actress (read Deepika) and tighter script could had done wonder for this long stretched drama. Film will release today and it will get average reviews but it will get historic opening due to lead star and biggest holiday of the year. Film might suffer in south due to big regional releases but it is sure to register biggest day of history at box office. Film will have huge 130 cr nett plus weekend in India and if it holds on weekdays then it can create history. Metro audience holds the key for the film.
Go for this one for Salman Khan and music! |
