DetailedAnalysis:
Rohit Dhawan made forgettable debut with 'Desi Boyz' and John Abraham has up and down record in last few years. So when they come together in big budget action comedy then onus on Varun Dhawan to deliver the goods.
Film begins with promise. Match-winning boy-in-blue Viraj Sharma (Saqib Saleem) disappears, just a couple of days before a crucial match with Pakistan. Indian special task force cop Kabir Shergill (John Abraham) is parachuted into a Middle Eastc ountry, which is the site of the crime. Local boy Junaid Ansari (Varun Dhawan)partners with the visitor, and off they go, sleuthing.
The slit-eyed stony-faced experienced cop and the bumbling rookie is an old Hollywood clich? but can turn into fun in the hands of good actors and directors: here, Dhawan and Abraham display limited wares, the former in his young wide-eyed joe avatar, and the latter swathed in tight tees and a permanent frown, swaggering down sandy desert outposts and shadowy villains’ dens. Both also get to shuck their shorts and show off their stuff in colourful briefs.
The boys have comely female company in these hape of the two gals, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nargis Fakhri, the former with a few speaking scenes and an item number where she cavorts in the midst of leering men, and the latter who’s around for purely decorative purposes
Film tries to have novel plot but screenplay and execution are clich? from 90's. Film remains in action comedy mode with forced but decent songs. Film never loses interest and but then never rises above average.
Performance wise, Varun Dhawan manages to infuse energy in somewhat tepid affair and side kick role. John Abraham is good but all female leads from Nargis Fakhri to Jacqueline are pathetic. Akshaye Khanna comes after brief break but he looks same old wine. Rest of actors including Saqeeb Saleem just sleepwalk. Rahul Dev is irritating and Akshay Kumar displays star power in cameo. Parineeti Chopra looks misfit in item song.
Film has decent editing. Background music is cliche. Cinematography is perfect, production design is outstanding and costumes are apt. Music is decent with couple of good songs but one chartbuster is missing.
Director Rohit Dhawan delivers another lazy film with no novel factor. It has more imprints of 90's done to death cinema.
Film released today and will open with decent numbers but to carry the momentum at box office will be a tough task. Film might score in mass centers but metros and multiplexes will be tough to score.
Go for this one if you want really old wine in not so new bottle!
