Detailed Analysis:
Tinu Suresh Desai made forgettable debut with '1920 London' and now he is back with this crime drama. It has more to do with Neeraj Pandey and his style of film making though he is writer and producer here.
Plot is tsraightforward and borrows heavily from real life infamous Nanawati murder case. A reupted navy officer Rustom Parvi (Akshay Kumar) comes early from his long overseas trip but finds out that his pretty wife Cynthia (Illeana D Cruz) is having an affair with their common friend Vikram (Arjan Bajwa). He kills Vikram with three gunshots and goes to police station to surrender for the crime. Vikram's sister Priya (Esha Gupta) opens fight to convict Rustom for the murder. How Rustom finds his own case in court and what is the real reason behind the crime form the rest of the film.
Film has interesting plot but screenplay gets static at times especially in 2nd half. Neeraj Pandey brngs his signature style with combo of thrill and patriotism. Dialogues are drmatic and entertaining. Film becomes court room drama but still entertains.
Performance wise, Akshay Kumar is first grade with rare restrained performance where he is wearing Navy uniform throughout with intense look yet manages to entertain. Surely he has hit purple patch with films like 'Baby', 'Airlift' and now 'Ruatom'. Illeana looks pretty and Esha Gupta is good. Kumud Mishra and Pawan Malhotra overact. Rest of the supporting cast is decent.
Film has crisp editing. Background music is good too. Cinematography is decent, production design is authentic and costumes are apt. Music is average as it has no scope in the film.
Director Tinu Suresh Desai has delivered a good film though it could had been great if he would had gone with Neeraj Pandey kind of treatment. Tinu has made it overdramatic. Film has no ups and downs as main protaganist is winning throughout, suspense revealed too early and even judge is taking side of victim in court room drama.
Film released today and will open with good numbers and it will have good week with big Independence Day holiday and Rakhi. Film should emerge as box office winner despite big clash.
Go for this one if you love thrilling court room drama!
