GIPPI Is Warm Tale Marred By Cliches
Pluses:
Minuses: Jayati Modi screams and screams, 1st half suffers from poor writing, inconsistent writing, songs fail to set mood
Critic Rating: 3/5
Business Rating: 3/5
Verdict:
Watch it for real and warm mother - daughter relation
Detail Analysis:
Karan Johar's Dharma Production always been associated with larger than life big budget films but this is first time that a woman is directing for banner and that too a small film about a school girl. Film takes you in the innocent world of school where protagonist Gippi is trying to come in terms with her divorcee mother, heartbreaks, teenage confusions about relations and of course boys! Film borrows from Hollywood flicks like "Mean Girls" but still creates its own environment.
Performance wise Riya Vij stands tall with some real heart wrenching momnets especially with mother. Divya Dutta plays her role with all the authority. Taha Shah has brief role but he plays it well too. Jayati Modi overacts and that more due to bad writing. Gippi's brother Arbaaz Kadwani is funny and Pankaj Dheer as father is decent. Editing is inconsistent and music/songs are so varied from punjabi to bhojpuri to pop that it fails to create any sort of mood. Writing suffers from all possible cliches and there some real good moments and then some real irritating one. Direction is good and Sonam Nair looks at ease with complex characters and events. Overall film will do well among multiplex audience and urban centers. Its not an excellent film but still the feel good factor is reason enough to give it a chance. Go for this ride full of warmth!
