Detailed Analysis:
Sriram Raghavan directed couple of amazing films i.e. 'Ek Haseena Thi' and 'Johnny Gaddar' before debacle of 'Agent Vinod'. Film looks interesting due to new intense look of Varun Dhawan.
Film starts with a bank robbery which goes horribly wrong. Harman (Vinay Pathak) and Laayak (Nawazuddin) rob a bank in daylight at M G Road Pune where they try to run away in a car in which Raghu's (Varu Dhawan) wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and his son are traveling. Laayak kills Misha in this mess and her son falls of the car. Raghu works in advertising firm and his life comes crashing down in just one moment. Laayak gets caught but Harman runs away with the money. Laayak gets life imprisonment and Raghu tries to search Laayak's friend but in vain. Raghu hires a private detective to search him but she gives him only one clue and that is of Laayak's girlfriend Jhumli (Huma Qureshi). That search also ends in vain as Laayak does not give any one clue of his accomplice. After waiting for 15 years, Raghu gets information about Laayak from social activist Shobha (Divya Dutta). She tells Raghu that Laayak is about to die of stomach cancer and he desperately wants to come out of jail for his last few days which can only happen if Raghu gives a consent letter. How Raghu gets new purpose to take revenge from all the culprits forms the rest of the story. Performance wise Nawazuddin walks away with claps, whistles and praises for impressive act. He is simply mindblowing in every scene and his one liners are awesome. Surprisingly Nawzuddin is the hero of the film even in climax and that overshadows Varun Dhawan as an actor as well as his character. One wonders whether Varun was aware of that. Yami Gautam becomes problem for his husband once again after 'Action Jackson' and she is very poor in 5 minute role. Radhika Apte is impressive as wife of Harman, Huma Qureshi shines in a challenging role and Divya Dutta is as dependable as always. Vinay Pathak repeats himself. Film has an impressive background score and couple of hit songs. Editing is good while cinematography is average. Story is good too but screenplay loses track especially in 2nd half towards climax in order to be too smart. Dialogues for Nawazuddin deserve special mention for impeccable impact. Art department and costume department are average.
Director Sriram Raghavan gives another thriller in zone of 'Ek Hasina Thi' but this time quirkiness looks forced like mention of Maratha Mandir or few one liners of Varun Dhawan. He tries to outsmart audience in climax with a philosophical end but then motive of complete film is defeated and that too when character waited for 15 years. This remains his 3rd best work. Film will release tomorrow and has good release. Film has good chances at box office. But still adult rating, cricket match on Sunday and exam period will pull film back. Film should do good business and anything close to 35-40 cr nett will be a good result.
Go for this one if you are a fan of intense dark thriller with adult content!
