YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI Is Fantastic Celebration Of Love And Friendship
Pluses:
Minuses: Madhuri does not create required spark, climax is a bit let down, uneven editing
Critic Rating: 3.5/5
Business Rating: 4/5
Verdict:
Watch it for new superstar Ranbir and chartbuster music
Detail Analysis:
Dharma Productions always known for producing blockbuster romantic films over the years. Ayan Mukherjee directed Ranbir in "Wake Up Sid" and film received rare combo of critical and decent commercial success. This team is back with new offering this weekend. Film unfolds on the lines of DDLJ which still remains reference point for all romantic films. First half depicts Manali trip as film kicks off with some real funny sequences. Be it few lines of "Jumma Chumma" or dialogues like "Dulhan Bani Daayan", fun takes the centre stage. Train and station sequene set the mood. First song "Ghagra" followed by "Subhaanalaah" and "Balam Pichkari" give audience a lot to smile in 1st half. "Badtameez Dil" is outstanding on big screen and "Dilliwali Girlfriend" is foot tapping in 2nd half. Climax is letdown as it leaves you gasping for more.
Performance wise Ranbir Kapoor as Kabeer Thapar is simply outstanding. He gets centre stage and he fulfills all the expectations. He reminds you of SRK of 90's. his charm is infectious and his charisma is all over. Deepika as Naina Talwar is good but for some strange reasons she does not get expected screen time. Kalki as Aditi overstays her welcome but still she impresses with her antics. Aditya Roy as Avi does fairly well as he gets only character with some kind of deoression and realism. Farookh Sheikh as Ranbir's father and Tanvi as his step mom are good. Kunaal Roy Kapoor walks in a guest appearance opposite Kalki's character. Music is the big plus as every song is a chartbuster. Songs do add big time to the proceedings. "Badtameez Dil" and "Balam Pichkari" stand out. Editing is big minus as film suffers with great amount of inconsistency in 2nd half. Cinematography and costumes are highlights as always in Dharma film. Director Ayan Mukherjee again picks a different topic for this romantic tale. Be it Awara tattoo on Ranbir's forearm or subtle romantic shots, director shows his class. But despite showing dillema between career and relationships, he fails to provide closures to almost every character. Overall film will appeal big time to urban audience and there is enough content for single screen small city audience too though they might not come out praising. Film might remind you of few past hits due to not so great screenplay but still songs and Ranbir make sure you get more than worth of money back. Go for this as Bollywood gets his next star who can act too for a change!
