BROTHERS Is Emotional Old Fashioned Yet Entertaining Family Drama
Pluses: Siddharth Malhotra repeats himself from 'Ek Villain' yet he impresses with his honesty and intensity, Akshay Kumar is outstanding in a restrained performance, Jacqueline Fernandez manages to hold screen in not so glam avatar Minuses:
really inconsistent editing editing, boring slow songs in such action film, super slow screenplay
Critic Rating: 3/5
Business Rating: 3.5/5
Verdict:
Watch it for old school dramatic entertainment
Detailed Analysis:
'Brothers' is another remake by Karan Malhotra after his debut with remake of 'Agneepath' and it has big cast as well as cost. Film is big holiday release and there is big buck business expected out of it.
Film tells story of rather complicated and dysfunctional family. Gary Fernandes (Jackie Shroff) has two sons David (Akshay Kumar) and Monty (Siddharth Malhotra). But both are step brothers as Gary killed his first wife in freakish accident cum slapgate. David has obviously some troubled relation with Monty. David is honest but low paid teacher so he fights on streets to earn money in order to keep his family together. Jenny (Jacqueline) is too sweet to be true wife of David. It all seems too predictable and cliche before this street fight and relationships cross path which forms most of the 2nd half. Performance wise Siddharth Malhotra is the real hero of the film who manages to impress despite same brooding look from his earlier hit 'Ek Villain'. Watch out for his energy and intensity in climax! Akshay Kumar delivers another mature act though he suffers due to some really poor over dramatic cliche moments and dialogues. Jacqueline is good but then looks really over the top in climax. Supporting cast including Shefali, Ashustosh Rana and Kiran Kumar is really 2nd rate and director/producer should had gone for better and fresh faces. Kareena Kapoor sizzles in item number! Film has boring and over cooked screenplay which is complete mess. Dialogues are good but at times it went overboard. Film has very poor editing. Music is misfit with so many slow songs in an energetic boxing film. Cinematography is excellent and production design is inconsistent.
Director Karan Malhotra shows similar approach to this debut film. He loves old school drama and keeps it very much slow. How much today's audience accepts this is the million dollar question. Film will release tomorrow and it might take a big opening but will have a big evening considering national holiday day after tomorrow. Film will depend on reviews and word of mouth from Monday onwards after holiday aided weekend. Looks like an average one at box office !
Go for this one as this will entertain you if you survive rather slow 1st half! |
