Movie Review PYAAR KA PUNCHNAMA 2 Offers Nothing New But Still An Entertaining Fun Ride

Film will release today and it will get good to average reviews but it will get a good opening due to franchise factor. Film might suffer in north and east due to Navratri festivities and on Sunday cricket match will affect it to an extent. But still it should come out with good weekend as there is not much competition at box office.

Luv Ranjan made impressive debut with sleeper hit 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2'. Film remained in theaters for ten weeks and became kind of cult among college going youth. He followed it with disappointing 'Akaash Vaani' and now he is back with the sequel of his successful film after four years.

Rishi Kapoor plays a Mr Bhalla, who runs a bakery in a hill station called Kasol. He is never seen to be baking anything. All he does is to yell and shout at his wife, and sonny boy Inder (played by Supriya Pathak and Abhishek Bachchan, respectively). Why? That’s a mystery.

Ms Pathak is to be found in an ‘ashram’, looking vacantly about. Abhishek switches locations from a Bangkok poolside with bikinied babes to the winding roads of Kasol, where he encounters college-mate Nimmi (Asin, colourless) who has feelings for him. Why anyone would have a tender spot for someone as indifferent as Inder is an even bigger mystery.

Up pops a long-haired goon called Cheema who’s only job is to twirl a gun, and threaten people. Why the talented Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub took on this thankless part is a … yes, you got that. It’s a puzzle.

Plot? Non-existent. The jokes? Screamingly unfunny. Rishi Kapoor doing ‘su-su’, singing ‘aiyi-aiyi-aiyi’? Groan. When will grown men wanting to urinate stop becoming an acceptable gag in Bollywood? Can someone solve this? It’s always good to see Supriya Pathak, but when will someone come up with a substantial part for her?

The film starts off with the introduction of Anshul aka Gogo (Kartik Aaryan), Siddharth aka Chauka (Sunny Singh Nijjar) and Tarun aka Thakur (Omkar Kapoor). Amongst the trio, Tarun is the one who is highly paid (Rs. 3 lakhs per month). And it is due to this reason that Siddharth and Anshul live their life kingsize (alongwith Tarun, of course) without having to worry much about finance. Right from buying the drinks to paying the monthly rent of the flat, Tarun is the 'go-to' man for Siddharth and Anshul. Life for the trio is all about working hard and partying harder. Life is very 'normal' and routine for the gang ... till the time three girls enter their respective lives. While Anshul falls head over heels in love with Cheeku aka Ruchika Khanna (Nushrat Bharucha), Siddharth goes bonkers over the 'family inclined' Supriya (Sonalli Sehgall) and the 'gym-conscious' Tarun's heart skips its beat over the fit girl Kusum (Ishita Sharma). The three boys just cannot believe their luck with their respective partners. Life becomes one big party for the three couples until one day when the 'money-minded' Kusum speaks out her 'concern' towards Tarun spending his hard earned money to pay the dinner bill of his boys and their girlfriends. After that, the girls start taking control of the boys' lives and the boys slowly and gradually realise that their respective partners are not as cool as they seemed to be initially. All in the name of love, while Anshul lands up becoming Cheeku's multipurpose boyfriend who drives her and her gal pals around for their shopping, Siddharth becomes Kusum's 'ATM boyfriend' from whom she just keeps taking money, while Tarun ends up becoming house help of sorts to Supriya's parents.

After few meetings,three boys realise that befriending the girls was the biggest mistake of their lives and that they are being taken for a royal ride. Just when they are about to break up with their respective girlfriends, the girls start wooing their boys all over again in order to let bygones be bygones and give their relationship a fresh start. Will Anshul, Siddharth and Tarun forgive their respective girlfriends and give a fresh start to their relationships, will the boys move over these girls and find someone new, do the boys really get the love that they really need and what happens to the Cheeku, Supriya and Kusum ultimately is what forms the rest of the story.

Performance wise Omkaar Kapoor makes a smashing debut as he is simply hilarious throughout. Other debutant Sunny Singh also does a very decent job. Karthik again walks away with claps and 'seetis' with his monologue. Ishita looks ravishing and her strip tease scene is simply wow. Nusrat and Sonali fail miserably due to overacting.

Film has decent screenplay but dialogues are hilarious. Though stale story disappoints to an extent. Film has razor sharp editing. Music is poor and all songs work as loo break. Cinematography is good and production design is perfect. Background score deserves special mention.

DirectorLuv Ranjan might deliver another successful film but he fails to show growth as director as he is saved by some brilliant performances. His writing and vision fail to add anything new in sequel.

Go for this one if crazy young comedies are your cup of tea!
