Detailed Analysis:

Emraan Hashmi has huge setback in last few years with strings of flops i.e. 'Ghanchakkar', 'Shanghai', 'Ungli'. Now he is back with huge biopic 'Azhar' but it is again directed by Tony D Souza who delivered huge duds in 'Blue' and 'Boss'.

Saru, full name Saraswati, is an obedient daddy’s girl. Inder is a broody, massively-tattooed loner. And ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ , not to be confused with the ’82 film of the same name, is a manual of how Not to make a contemporary romantic film.

Picture this: a heavy-handed father who thunders, flinging out instructions on how wife and daughters ought to behave. Falling in love with an unsuitable boy, ‘aiyyo rama’. Acting on your own will, ‘parmeshwara’. Doing what your heart tells you to, ‘aaj se thum mere liye marr gayi’.

Which leaves Saru (Mawra Hocane) to smile, simper, weep. Hesitate. Propitiate. And to look at her stony-faced father (Chowdhary, trying very hard to be a credible South Indian patriarch and failing) who’d rather conduct a wake than understand his daughter’s desires, and wait for his ‘permission’ before she can take a step forward. Inder (Harshwardhan Rane, armed with impressive bod, limited expression), who has daddy issues of his own, scowls and growls. The deep hurt caused by his dad is revealed much too late, and much too cursorily. The rest is filled by these two unlikely characters—Inder and Saru—developing feelings, over a brain tumour, impending tragedy, and more tears.

Film tells story of 'infamous' but most prolific captain of Indian cricket team from 90's, Mohd. Azharuddin. Azhar Emraan Hashmi) is told by his maternal grandfather that he will play 100 test matches otherwise he will beat him and his bat should talk more than him. These two facts are repeated umpteen times in film. His arrange marriage to Naureen (Prachi Desai) is followed by one 'Dirty Picture' sort of song and affair with Sangeeta (Nargis Fakhri) is followed by a 'Jannat' type of song. A bookie M K Gupta (Rajesh Sharma) offers Azhar money to under perform which Azhar accepts and that is the interval point. How he fights case of innocence through his friend (Kunal Roy Kapur) against fierce lawyer (Lara Dutta) forms the climax of the film and yes one gets to know the real purpose behind accepting money from bookie as well as Azhar's heart change. There is some real caricaturist characters of Azhar's famous team mates i.e. Kapil, Ravi and Ajay.

Film has very interesting plot and some twists are interesting. Film is also a shining example of over dose of old school filmy dialogues which is always a case with Rajat Arora. Film does not hold any interest after big twist at interval point as it goes down to another love story and justification of some really kiddish kind.

Performance wise, Emraan Hashmi solely lifts the film. He walks like Azhar, has right intensity and though his physical attributes are not close enough, his mature expressions and performance are awesome. This might be his big comeback which was badly needed. Nargis Fakhri is pathetic and Prachi Desai is decent. Rajesh Sharma is outstanding again even in a brief role. Lara Dutta hams and so does all team mates of Emraan including Gautam Gulati.

Film has inconsistent editing and very irritating back and forth pattern. Background music is cliche and loud. Cinematography is average, production design is apt and costumes fit the bill. Songs are decent but not a single chartbuster.

Director Tony D Souza delivers a better film this time around but still falls short in terms of detailing and grip. In 30 years of time period, there is no distinct difference on face of Emraan, why so much back and forth editing and why Nargis and Oye oye song. He spoils potential of a huge blockbuster biopic and delivers a routine Emraan film.

Film will release today and it will get decent reviews and it should get good opening as its a solo release. Film has to score 50 cr at box office in order to break even and that seems certain at the moment as it should do good business in massy centers.
