Anushka Sharma Talks About Gender Discrimination In The Film Industry

The actress agreed that there is an obvious discrimination between men and women in the film industry and has personally experienced it. Anushka said, "Girls are expected to be good-looking and be interesting enough for a guy to be interested in. But why is it that only young women are desirable? There is a sexual connotation attached to that. Even if you're not just showing your t**s and a**, what are women bringing to a film, other than their beauty and nakhras? This is also happening because big actors are backing these kinds of films." "People don't like women with guts in this industry. I was just telling a friend that we are so lucky that we live in India because everybody's taste is so mediocre here that we are all stars," she added. The actress also revealed that if you ask for what you think you deserve it means that you have attitude. "But we actresses are not dumb, like floosies. We have a mind, we are intelligent, and if we are making a suggestion, we are not being difficult," she said. She further stated that if the actress has a bigger role the male actor won’t accept the film. She also pointed out that the male and female newcomers are paid differently. "It is assumed that men need more money, they need to run a family, but women are looked after," the actress said. When Anushka was asked if her male counterparts - Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, and Varun Dhawan - have left their mark in the industry, she said, "They will be different when they do something which is different. How will we know until they actually do something? There is so much pressure for this 100 crore-film-thing. This benchmark for success is corrupting the system. Actors are scared to take risks. It is easier for girls to take risks because no one is expecting anything of them anyway."
