Detailed Analysis: Imtiaz Ali made some interesting romantic films like 'Jab We Met', 'Love Aaj Kal' and 'Rockstar'. Ranbir Deepika delivered biggest non - holiday grosser ever 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' so this trio is hot among film enthusiastic cinema lovers not only box office wise but also from perspective of quality of films.
The film tells story of Ved Sahani (Ranbir Kapoor) from Shimla and Tara Maheshwari (Deepika Padukone) from Kolkata. They meet in Corsica where majority of 1st half unfolds. They didn't share their true identity and carry on enjoying carefree time as Don and Mona Darling. They go their respective ways and after couple of years Tara manages to catch Ved in Delhi where he is working like nay other normal youngster in corporate world. Tara is disappointed to see him like this as she had different image of him from Corsica. How he transforms himself from what he is to what he could be or what he wants to be forms the rest of the film. The pace of the film is good in the 1st half and there are some funny moments and story moves at brisk space. But the director suddenly puts break before interval when story shifts from Corsica to New Delhi. 1st part of 2nd half brings down the film for masses as it gets into trippy mode and Ranbir behaves weirdly for no substantial reason. Film gets back on track in 2nd part of 2nd half. There isn’t much of sense in script in 2nd half where director wants to connect dots between Corsica and Delhi in order to highlight contrast of our lives. It is that kind of film where you just have to go with the flow and do not think much about the story as well as logic as it more about world between 'heart' and 'mind'. Performance wise Ranbir Kapoor is complete package as he dances well, acts well and makes you entertain throughout. He is simply outstanding and proves why is he next super star in making no matter how bad films he chose in last couple of years. But Deepika Padukone again surprises with her subtle yet effective performance. Watch out for scene when she confronts Ranbir in office or when she walks away in taxi! Piyush Mishra is good as random 'baba' in Shimla and Jawed Sheikh as father of Ranbir is good too. Film has below par screenplay but dialogues are good in and story is interesting with trademark confused lover track of Imtiaz Ali. Film has inconsistent editing as film is too slow in earlier part of 2nd half and 10 minutes too long. Music is weak link of the film as there is no chartbuster. A R Rahman provides some melodies but no song leaves you spellbound in cinema. Cinematography is superb by Ravi Chandran, production design is perfect and costumes are apt. Background score is good.
Director Imtiaz Ali has done decent job with this one but to be honest he is saved by presence of lead pair. He has again tried to present a romantic film in different light by giving it twist but under the same lens of confused souls. Film works in parts but it never rises above good as was the case with 'Rockstar' which was truly deep in terms of philosophy. Still he should be applauded as he chose to make an interetsing film rather than an safe hit dance music film. Film will release today and it will get average to good reviews but it will get good opening due to lead pair. Film might suffer to an extent due to weak release period as last week of November had not produced hit films in last decade or so. Film will have 30-35 cr nett plus weekend in India but it does not have mass appeal for long run at box office.
Go for this one for magic of romance and chemistry of lead pair! |
