Music Composers: Ashutosh Phatak

‘Zubaan’ a film directed by Mozez Singh starring Vicky Kaushal, Sarah Jane Dias and Raghav Chanana, ready to hit the screens on 4th March, 2016.The film is a Musical - drama film and has an interesting concept of a young boy who loses his faith and develops a fear of music. The film is his journey in fighting that fear and thus finding himself. Let’s find out if the music is worth listening to in our journey through the review.
The album starts with the track ‘Music Is My Art’ sung by Rachel Varghese in a chic and voguish way creating a perfect voice for Sara Jane Dias who dances to it in the film. The track has a highly western feel and takes you way back to the late 80’s and early 90’sreminding us of the Late Nazia Hassan style of singing with some amazing techno beats composed pleasantly by Ashutosh Phatak on lyrics penned down by VarunGrover & Ashu Pathak himself. Ratings: 3/5
The next song in the album is ‘Dhruvtara/Dhoop Ki Zubaan’ talks about the morning star and is sung by Keerthi Sagathia & Rachel Varghese to Varun Grover’s lyrics which are interesting but will surely go un-noticed due to its composition being very low on energy. You will not want to listen to this song more than once. Ratings: 2/5
The album moves to the next song is ‘Bhaven Tu Jaan’ a slow song sung spiritually by Manraj S Patar using just one musical instrumental through the entire song it talks about having looked everywhere for its love. The song is a Qawwali originally sung by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab. This one’s a peaceful one. Ratings: 2.5/5
‘Tu Hai Tera Khuda’ the next song of the album sung by Keerthi Sagathia and Apeksha Dandekara in a voice that will strike an instant vibe with the youngsters of today, is a classical western track but lacks what is needed to get registered in your mind. Ratings: 2.5/5
The next song ‘Kori Pukkar’ is a slow rock track with a mandarin style of composition for bollywood. Croonedby Rachel Varghese and the Punjabi vocals sung by Mandar Deshpande sounding effortlessly soulful. Ratings: 2.5/5
‘Ajj Saanu O Mileya’ is a Punjabi song mixed with soft rock beats gracefully sung by Mandar Deshpande in his raw and earthy voice and Rachel Varghese, to the lyrics penned down by Surjit Patar & Varun Grover once again not leaving much to remember. Ratings: 2.5/5
The next Punjabi songis ‘Kadi Aa Mil Yaar Pyareya’ is an offbeat track with strong folk vocals by Manraj Patar with almost no music in the background. Ratings: 2.5/5
The album from here turns into a completely spiritual one ‘Lakh Khushiyaan’ and ‘Jiske Sir Upar Tu Swami’ are Gurbani’s spiritual devotional hymns. Are soulful and enlightening and the best way to respect them would be not reviewing it but listening to it to attain internal peace. Both are sung beautifully, respectively by Bhai Mahinderjit Singh and Minu Bakshi in their divine voices. ‘Tu Mera Pita’ ,‘Mittar pyare Nu’ and end’s with ‘Ek Onkar’
Overall, the music album of ‘Zubaan’ is a very confusing one, starts with some very western folk kind of tracks moving into the spiritual zone making it difficult to rate critically. If this one is considered to be a musical film, I’d say it’s difficult for it to leave a mark. The spiritual side of the album may be its only saving grace. Ratings: 2.5/5
