Detailed Analysis:

'Gangaajal' got immense critical acclaim and decent box office success a decade back. Now sequel is back where Priyanka Chopra is replacing Ajay Devgn.

Saru, full name Saraswati, is an obedient daddy’s girl. Inder is a broody, massively-tattooed loner. And ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ , not to be confused with the ’82 film of the same name, is a manual of how Not to make a contemporary romantic film.

Picture this: a heavy-handed father who thunders, flinging out instructions on how wife and daughters ought to behave. Falling in love with an unsuitable boy, ‘aiyyo rama’. Acting on your own will, ‘parmeshwara’. Doing what your heart tells you to, ‘aaj se thum mere liye marr gayi’.

Which leaves Saru (Mawra Hocane) to smile, simper, weep. Hesitate. Propitiate. And to look at her stony-faced father (Chowdhary, trying very hard to be a credible South Indian patriarch and failing) who’d rather conduct a wake than understand his daughter’s desires, and wait for his ‘permission’ before she can take a step forward. Inder (Harshwardhan Rane, armed with impressive bod, limited expression), who has daddy issues of his own, scowls and growls. The deep hurt caused by his dad is revealed much too late, and much too cursorily. The rest is filled by these two unlikely characters—Inder and Saru—developing feelings, over a brain tumour, impending tragedy, and more tears.

The movie, more than anything, is an extraordinary representation of the senior lady cop Abha Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) who is appointed as the first female SP of Bankipur district, Bihar. Later, SP Abha Mathur goes against the Local MLA of Bankipur (Manav Kaul) and henchmen of Lakhisarai district as she is not the one who can take even, a bit of corruption. The newly appointed Senior Inspector finds herself against very powerful goons and having people from her own department against her. How she fights back all the local MLAs (who are running the land mafia with the support of powerful politicians), forms the crux of the story.

What price she and localites have to pay while going against the goons, is something you have to go and watch in the movie.

Film has right tone and has very realistic intense yet entertaining approach. Film has decent writing  and screenplay is also average. Film never drags though inconsistent editing leaves one baffled at places.

Performance wise, undoubtedly, Priyanka Chopra has delivered a whistle-worthy performance throughout the film. Be it her action sequence or delivering power-packed dialogues, she has left no stones unturned to woo the crowd in the theatre. Director Prakash Jha, along with their co-stars Rahul Bhatt, Manav Kaul, Murli Sharma also did a rather impressive work in their negative roles.

Film has very massy dialogues but average screenplay . Film has below par editing. Background music is below par too. Cinematography is very good, production design is perfect and costumes are apt.

Director Prakash Jha continues to give relevant and important films which depict part of country which are not part of mainstream cinema storytelling. He deserves full marks for such entertaining film with such an intensity.

Film will release today and it will get glowing reviews and it will not get above average opening as Priyanka is riding on global popularity wave. Film has almost solo release status so a very good weekend is on the cards.

Go for this one for a powerful yet entertaining piece of cinema.
