Critic Rating:

4/5

Business Rating:

3/5

Verdict:

Watch it for important issues it raises and of course Amitabh Bachchan

Detailed Analysis:

Shoojit Sircar has given a quality hit film 'Piku' last year and now he is back as a producer to a social film about women and their exploitation in urban settings.

Plot is riveting and relevant. The three female protagonists of ‘Pink’ are your regular young women. Minal (Taapsee Pannu) is an events manager, whose work can extend into the late hours. Falak (Kirti Kulhari) works in a corporate set-up where image is all. Andrea (Tariang) is from the ‘North-East’ (Meghalaya, she says, but clearly no one is interested in the specifics : girls from the `North East’ are fair game, even if they are covered from top to toe). The girls share a flat in a ‘posh’ South Delhi locality, and we meet them first when they are heading back in a cab in the early hours of the morning, disturbed about something that has just happened. As the plot, terse and on-point, unravels, we get to know that the trio was in the company of three young men, after a rock concert in Surajkund in Haryana. Things take an ugly turn after the dinner that follows. The women have to make a run for it, and one of the young men ends up needing stitches in a deep bloody gash above his eye.

It doesn’t a genius to discover that the political might backing the injured Rajveer (Angad Bedi) and his friends, Dumpy (Raashul Tandon), Vishwa (Tushar Pandey) and another fellow (Vijay Varma) who wasn’t there but is happy to engineer and participate in the humiliation of the women, will try and turn the tables: instead of being the victims, they will be painted as the aggressors. How do you silence a courageous young woman who has the temerity to ask questions? You label her cheap, slut, whore: the film mutes the words but you can see it emblazoned on the face of the guy who says it out loud and the girls who have to hear it. You can see it in the body language of the female cop (Shankar, just so) who helps nail the wrong person for the crime.

Film has riveting plot and screenplay is tight. Dialogues are effective but at times it gets into over the top drama mode which is tad disappointing.

Performance wise, Amitabh Bachchan  is outstanding. He makes you root for women he is fighting for and keeps you glued to screen with right mixture of intensity and emotions. Watch out for cockroach scene in court! Taapse Pannu delivers her career best act with right medley of pain and anguish. Kir?i Kulha?i and Andrea Tariang are honest yet effective. Dhritiman Chaterjee is effective as judge and Angad Bedi is apt for the role. Piyush Mishra again delivers a memorable act in a very tough unpopular role.

Film has crisp editing. Background music is too loud at times. Cinematography is decent, production design is authentic and costumes are right. Music is bore.

Director Annirudh Chaudhary makes an impressive debut though he is anyways an award winning director in Bengali cinema. He gives the film right tone and brings all uncomfortable issues forward in an honest yet effective manner. Only issue with the film is the over the top drama approach at times. It is an important film but not the perfect one.

Film released today and will open low but should grow over weekend as it will receive glowing reviews.

Go for this one to know what is wrong in our society!
