Monday, 11th August, 2014, 05:20 PM IST Shashilal Nair is back to the world of filmdom with a biopic on ‘The Tragedy Queen’ Meena Kumari, being produced by the actress’ step-son Tajdar Amrohi. But we hear that all is not well between the director and producer.
Tajdar has re-started his father's banner, Mahal Pictures, under a new name, Kamal Amrohi Pictures. He clashed with the director regarding the portrayal of Meena Kumari in the film. Confirming the news, Tajdar said,“He wants to take certain cinematic liberties but I am not playing to the gallery. I know we are not making a documentary but we have to stick to the truth.”
The duo does not agree upon two things: the first one being the choice of actress who would essay the role of the legendary Meena Kumari;and the second one being the film’s title. Tajdar further informed, “Nair also wants a few song situations which I am not comfortable with. Actually, besides the heroine and the title, there are several other things that need to be shown in correct perspective. Creativity doesn't mean that you tell a warped story.”
The director and producer had an argument while discussing a scene wherein Meena Kumari and Tajdar Amrohi return from an Award ceremony and have an argument. Taj reveals the real story saying, “Chhoti ammi and abba did argue, not while they were returning from an awards night but after seeing ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’. Chhoti ammi asked my dad if he had liked her in the film and he said 'Great'. She reacted saying that his 'Great' didn't sound genuine.”
Another contradiction that the duo had was over her chances of being a mother. There were rumours of Meena being robbed of the chances of becoming a mother, but Amrohi says, “But the truth is that she had conceived twice. But she terminated the pregnancy herself, both times. And they did not divorce each other. For God's sake, she was a Sunni, yet she was laid to rest besides my dad in a Shia cemetery at Mazgaon.” Amrohi is confident that the film will put many questions to rest, “I am going to put the truth across in this film. These misconceptions need to be erased,” he said. However, the producer is certain that he wants Nair to work on the film. “Nair is the right man for the job, we will make it work," he concluded. |
