Detailed Analysis:
'Rang Rasiya' is hitting the screens tomorrow and it looks like an interesting biopic. Director Ketan Mehta has given memorable films in past and this controversial film was waiting its release for 6 years.
Film has some solid plot. It takes you to an inspiring journey of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma (Randeep Hooda). A simple guy born in Kerala and he takes the entire world by storm through his paintings. First he gets title of 'Raja' from a king (Ashish Vidyarthi) and then he leaves his wife who never appreciated his paintings and rather colorful carefree lifestyle. He lands in Mumbai in 1880 and then becomes first ever painter to paint Hindu Gods. This creates uproar among extremists and he faces wrath of certain religious groups headed by Chintamani (Darshan Zariwala). Beautiful lady Sugandha (Nandana Sen) whom he painted as Goddess was actually a prostitute and that becomes even bigger sensational issue. Later he paints her nude paintings inspired from Khajuraho which made extremist group file a case against him. But Ravi Varma never cared about anything but his art. He becomes first artist to take Hindi Gods in the house of every common man and even people from lower caste can worship who were not allowed inside temples. Sugandha faces wrath of society when her nude paintings come out in open due to selfish nature of Varma's business partner (Paresh Rawal). But against all odds Ravi Varma wins the case and went on to establish India's 1st printing press and started mass production of paintings. In the end, he gives his money to Dada Saheb Phalke who went on to become father of Indian cinema.
Performance wise Randeep Hooda deserves all the applause. He is eccentric, intense, romantic and natural throughout. Undoubtedly this is his best act so far. Nandana Sen not only dared to bare all but she acts with some vengeance. Watch out for climax scene in court! Vikram Gokhale and Paresh Rawal are excellent. Fereyna Wazheir is good and so is Darshan Zariwala. Rest of the supporting cast is good. He raises some serious question on freedom of art and bring forward greatness of man Raja Ravi Varma.
Film has some real melodious song from Sandesh Shandilya but my pick are haunting title song and 'Anhad Naad'. Editing is top notch and cinematography is good. Background score is decent. Screenplay is below par and dialogues are amateurish despite mind blowing story idea. Art department and costume department are good too.
Director Ketan Mehta tries something different but then he did not put any effort in writing. This film reminds of his earlier work like 'Mangal Pandey' where story idea was great but that magnum opus feel was missing. Still he should get all the credit for selecting such a story which should be told. Film will release tomorrow and should get at least 700 screens which will be more than enough for such film as there is not much business potential especially in interiors. Film will find it tough at box office as it will compete with 'The Shaukeens' and Hollywood biggie 'Interstellar'.
Go for this one if you want to watch quality cinema!
