Tuesday, 13th Jan 2015, 2:51 PM IST Actress-turned-director Nandita Das is all set to helm a film on Saadat Hasan Manto. Manto was a writer who authored 600 short stories and 100 radio plays. Talking about the movie, Das said, "It's not a biopic, my film will focus on the 10 tumultuous years of Manto's life, from 1942 to 1952, when he was charged with obscenity thrice. A charge that followed him when he moved to Pakistan. His fight for freedom of expression is all the more relevant today." "He wrote extensively about sex and sex workers. He was sensitive to women and his writings displayed a remarkable sense of humour. A special writer, he was a man of contradictions," she added. Nandita further stated that she has got on board some great people for the film. She said, "I have some fabulous collaborators, including his grand-niece Ayesha Jallal. I knew I wouldn't be able to pull this off on my own, so I found a co-writer in Mir Ali Husain who has written Nagesh Kukunoor's ‘Dor’. A couple of journalists familiar with Manto are also extending their support." When she was asked about casting of the film, Das said, "I do have a name; but for now, let it stay in my head."
