YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI Album Offers Variety And Still A Chartbuster
Karan Johar always delivered hit peppy music in his romantic sagas. If SOTY was album of the year last year for urban youth, YJHD arrives with similar expectations. Let’s figure out the quality of this much awaited album this time around!
1) Kabira- Arijit Singhand Harshdeep Kaur:
Arranged simply on dholak and rhythm guitars, Kabira features the upcoming versatile talent of Arijit Singh and the endearing feminine charm of Harshdeep kaur. The melody is soulful with Arijit doing the chorus and Harshdeep beautifully rendering the more traditional punjabi portions.
Rating: 3/5
2) Dilliwaali Girlfriend- Arijit Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan:
This one is an energetic but usual punjabi dance number that features Arijit with the vivacious Sunidhi Chauhan. You get a feeling that this one wants to be a 'Ainvayi Ainvayi'(unintentionally) with colloquial and slang-infused lyrics set to a peppy track by Pritam. But it loses its charm once the hook line 'dilliwaali girfriend'- the most catchy part of the song- starts sounding repetitive.
Rating: 2.5/5
3). Ghagra- Vishal Dadlani and Rekha Bhardwaj:
I was tempted by the title of this song because of the odd but interesting pairing of Vishal Dadlani & Rekha Bhardwaj and it definitely quenches my thirst for an original 'item' number. The lyrics are wonderfully pitched for a naughty number and introduce the Indian masses to the American aphrodisiac Viagra! The only drawback to this one is the predictability. One wishes for an interesting 'bridge' that would just break the monotony.
Rating: 3/5
4) Subhan Allah- Sreeram
The winner of Indian Idol 2010- Sreeram gets his big break with this romantic number. To be fair, Sreeram does an excellent job and fits the requirement of this song perfectly. Only, the song is a template product from Pritam that particularly reminded me of 'Aaj din chadheya' from Love Aaj Kal- also by Pritam. The melody is sweet but just a tad too familiar.
Rating: 3/5
5) Badtameez Dil- Benny Dayal and Shefali
Lyrics- intentionally gibberish, music-fun and zany,song-sold out for all good money! Benny Dayal shows the much expected spunk in his voice while Shefali does justice to the small part that she has.
Rating: 4/5
6) Balam Pichkari- Vishal Dadlani & Shalmali Kholgade
This one starts off with a folksy bit and graduates to become a full blown Holi number. The vocals are in place and the arrangements are a fusion between dholak & drums, harmonium & techno. My only grouse, would have loved to have more harmonium than techno, more dholak thandrums.
Rating: 4/5
7) Ilahi- Mohit Chauhan
This one is a touristy delight performed by the maverick voice of Mohit Chauhan. The arrangements are simple with guitars and drums doing duty. A cross between fun and soulful, this one reminded me of how much I love 'Phir se ud chala' from Rockstar.
Rating: 4.5/5
8) Kabira- Tochi Raina & Rekha Bhardwaj
Another interesting pairing makes an appearance. Toch iis in the same vein as Iktara(wake up sid) and Rekha is at her endearing best. Its the melody that steals the show for me even in comparison to its own cousin at the top of the title list. Pritam does a fine job of putting together an emotional but hummable track.
Rating: 4/5
Final Verdict:
Overall album is one of the best compilations of the year if not the best. Album offers huge variety, be it a Holi number or an item number or a heartbreak song or a disco number. This is sure sort chartbuster and will lift film’s fortune at box office!
