Top 29 Opening Days At Box Office In 2014, HAPPY NEW YEAR Is On Top With Big Margin

First five months of 2014 went without much activity at box office. 'Jai Ho' disappointed and medium budget film like '2 States' and 'Main Tera Hero' did good business. 'Queen' and 'Ragini MMS 2' were outstanding hits. June started the flow of big releases and potential blockbusters.

Akshay Kumar starrer 'Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty' scored at box office on its opening day as film collected 12.18 cr nett and went on to cross 100 cr nett. Then 'Humshakals' scored on day one despite bad reviews and collected 12.50 cr nett. This was 3rd best opening days of 2014. 

Then dark horse at box office, 'Ek Villain' has blown away all releases and stands tall as 2nd best opening of 2014 with 16.72 cr nett day one. This is even bigger considering film's modest budget and rather fresh cast. As per screen average ('Ek Villain' in 2500 screens & 'Jai Ho' in 3800 screens), this is the no.1 film of 2014. Film is also heading for huge weekend. 

Then Karan Johar's Varun - Alia starrer 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' has scored 7th best opening day of 2014. Film collected 9.02 cr nett on opening day. This is biggest opening for Varun Dhawan and 2nd best for Alia after '2 States'. Now biggest release of year so far, Salman Khan starrer 'Kick' has amended the mistakes of 'Jai Ho' with thunderous opening on normal working day and that too in lean period of pre - Eid. Film collected huge 26.50 cr nett on day one from 4100 screens which is great. This was 2nd best non holiday opener. 

Akshay Kumar came back with 2nd release of the year 'Entertainment' and failed to live upto expectations. Film collected 11.16 cr nett on Friday from 2800 screens which was 8th best of the year. Film will remain below average at box office.'Singham Returns' released on national holiday and that is why sequel effect coupled with Rohit Shetty - Ajay Devgn combo took it to huge 32.09 cr nett on opening day. This is best opening of 2014 beating 'Kick'. 

Next massy release Emraan Hashmi starrer 'Raja Natwarlal' took 14th best opening day of 2014 despite holiday with a below par number of 6.10 cr nett. 'Mardaani' had 20th best opening day of the year with 3.46 cr nett. 'Mary Kom' released with much fanfare and expectations. Film scored 12th best opening day in 2014 with 7.90 cr nett. This was a good number for a film without any big male hero. 

Next big release Hrithik and Katrina starrer 'Bang Bang' was expected to take humongous start at the box office and that is what the film did. Film took advantage of the national holiday and collected 27.50 crore nett which is 2nd best of 2014. 'Haider' co-incided with 'Bang Bang' and that is why with limited release in 1250 screens, 1st day total of 6.25 crore nett was very good and 16th best of 2014.

But as expected, king of box office Shahrukh Khan broke every record on opening day with humongous 44.97 cr on day one and that was at least 20% better than 'Dhoom 3' record. Film had lesser show than 'Chennai Express' and 'Kick' but still it managed mind blowing numbers. This will be one record which will be a challenge for big film to come.

November proved to be one disastrous month at box office as all releases including 'Kill Dil', 'Happy Ending' and 'Ungli' flopped badly at box office with low opening day figure. That bad run continued till 1st weke of December as big Ajay Devgn - Prabhu Dheva release 'Action Jackson' too opened with poor opening day numbers which were less than 'Himmatwala'. Last but biggest release of 2014 'PK' opened well consideirng non holiday but film was way less thna Aamir Khan's last release 'Dhoom 3'. It is 7th all time best opening and 4th best of the year 2014.
