Top 44 Domestic Opening Weekends In 2016, Dangal At Top
2014 proved to be a bad year at box office for Bollywood and that is why there was great hope from 2015. But even 2015 remained flat in terms of business and 2016 is also on similar levels as last year. Big films have underperformed and now flow of big releases start with 'Housefull 3'.
'Fan' topped the chart with 52.35 cr nett weekend though it was good but not great as per star power of Shahrukh Khan. Now 'Housefull 3' has taken over with 53.31 cr nett weekend which was superb. 'Airlift' had 44.30 cr nett opening weekend which was really good considering the class appeal. 'Baaghi' has cemented Tiger as bankable actor with 38.58 cr nett opening weekend. 'Udta Punjab' scored 33.80 cr nett over weekend which was good number considering such dark subject and it was 5th best in 2016. 'Sultan' came and conquered all films in 2016 with some margin. Film collected 105.52 cr nett in 1st weekend. Varun Dhawan starrer 'Dishoom' collected 37.32 cr nett over weekend which was 6th best of the year. Akshay Kumar starrer 'Rustom' crossed 50.42 cr nett over weekend which was 4th best of the year. 'Mohenjodaro' was disappointment with 30.54 cr nett approx weekend.
'Happy Bhag Jayegi' managed to grow over weekend but due to low starting point it only collected 11.03 cr nett over weekend. Sonakshi Sinha starrer was strictly average with 16.65 cr nett weekend which was 21st best of the year. Siddharth -Katrina starre? 'Baar Baar Dekho' collected poor 21.16 cr nett which was 14th best of the year. Nawazuddin starre? 'Freaky Ali' collected 8.50 cr nett which was 27th best. Emraan Hashmi starre? 'Raaz Reboot' had disappointing weekend of 18.09 cr nett which was 22nd best of the year. On contrary, 'Pink' collected solid 21.51 cr nett which was 14th best of the year. Probably first time star power of cricketer ensured huge weekend of 66 cr nett for 'M S Dhoni' which was 2nd best of the year. 'Mirzya' turned out to be disappointment of the year with pathetic 6.50 cr nett weekend.
'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' collected 34.60 cr nett over weekend which was decent considering clash and weak pre-Diwali period. 'Shivaay' collected 28.56 cr nett over weekend which was strictly average. 'Force 2' had an average weekend with 20.05 cr. Dear Zindagi was impressive with 32.50 cr in the first weekend. Kahaani 2 collects 16.94 cr in the opening weekend. Befikre stands at 10th with 34.26 cr. The year concludes with Dangal becoming the top grosser with almost 107 crs in the first weekend.
